Help! I Want to Write. How Do I Get Started?

I'm often told by people that they want to write a book but don't know where to begin. Well, the first step in writing is picking up your pen. No, seriously. It really is! Now grab yourself a piece of paper. I'm going to walk you through everything I did when I first began my writing projects. I began by asking myself "what's my plan for this project?" In order to figure that out I asked myself these questions?

  • Why do you want to write a book?

  • What type of book do you want to write?

  • Note:Think about the different genres(autobiography, drama, mystery, etc)

  • What do you want to write about?

  • From which aspect do you want to write your story?

  • Who are you writing for? (What is your target audience? Who do you want to read your book?)

  • Note: Everyone is not an answer. Although your book can pertain to a large variety of people, narrow down your focus to a specific group. In trying to reach that particular group you can still effect as many people as you desire.

  • What is the passion that is driving you to accomplish this task?

  • What do you want to accomplish by writing this book?

  • What is the main message you want to convey in this project?

  • What will the book consist of? (journals, poetry, stories, etc.)

  • What is your deadline for writing this book?

  • Note: It is important to set a deadline because it's establishing a goal for you to work towards.

Knowing why you want to write this project is just as important as writing it, especially if this is an emotional project. There may be moments when the emotions are running so high that you will want to quit. You will have to remind yourself of why you started in the first place in order to keep going.

Next, make a list of all the topics you would like to write about. From that list, decide which subjects you are most comfortable with discussing. For example, if you want to write about your life, how much of it are you completely comfortable with exposing?

Once you have all this figured out, guess what? You've just jumped your first hurdle. Now that you have an idea of what you want to do and why, you can take your plan and move into the preparation stage of your project. The preparation stage of your project is where you begin to picture what the chapters of your book will consist of. I don't want to overwhelm you all at one time, so let's knock this portion out of the way first. Then, I'll dive deeper into the next phase. Here's to happy beginnings on your trail to starting your writing project. Good Luck!
